holopopomo day 8: ode to the serif

So here we are.

Today’s Horribly Local Poor Poetry Month (HoLoPoPoMo) entry:

ode to the serif

A serif never got an ode
I should correct this now
For were it not for serifs
A font would have no wow

It’s just a tiny jutting out
On T’s and R’s and I’s
As such, it’s hardly noticed, save
For typeset-centric guys

I know I am a hypocrite
No serifs in this font
But Arial reads easier
Plus -- I do what I want

O serif small and mighty
You have a nifty name
That people do not know of you’s
An unsurprising shame

You do not ask for anything
No payment, tax or tariff
But odes to you do not exist
‘Cause not much rhymes with “serif”

The end.

Yes indeed. Welcome to me.

holopopomo day 7: twit

So here we are.

Today’s Horribly Local Poor Poetry Month (HoLoPoPoMo) entry:

twit

twitter twitter burning bright
let your trending tags take flight
little sparrow made of words
misspelled hashtags for the herds
instagrams with extra grain
tiny thoughts to wax and wane
with flashing thumbs they type their barbs
and all i want to eat are carbs

The end.

Yes indeed. Welcome to me.

holopopomo day 6: let it be

So here we are.

Today’s Horribly Local Poor Poetry Month (HoLoPoPoMo) entry is still concerned about that Disney-Lucasfilm deal and the promise of an Episode 7:

let it be

Long ago and far away
A story was complete
It took a while, we didn’t mind
‘Cause it was hard to beat
We held it close and held it dear
In nineteen eighty-three
(Millennials, please shut up now
You’re of no help to me)
It had a start, it had an end
The middle was the best
We bought the toys, we bought the books
And all the (licensed) rest
Then after we had come of age
And thought we’d seen it all
There’d be another episode!
A whole new op’ning crawl!
We waited anxiously for days
In long and winding lines
Anticipating all the fun
How it would blow our minds
But all we got were Gungans
Think on that, my doubting friend
He gave us freaking Jar Jar, people...
STORIES NEED TO END.

So do poems. The end.

Yes indeed. Welcome to me.

holopopomo day 5: vote hard

So here we are.

Today’s Horribly Local Poor Poetry Month (HoLoPoPoMo) entry is a reminder for tomorrow:

vote hard

do it

all the way

don’t leave your chads
dimpling or
dangling or
hanging or
questioning

that’s so turn-of-the-century

poke the hell out of them
poke ‘em good
twice
maybe even thrice

pull the lever hard
and lock it in
oh yeah

do it

vote hard

and not just because you get a cute little sticker

but sometimes there’s a bake sale outside
and you can buy a cookie from some kids

do it

The end.

Yes indeed. Welcome to me.

holopopomo day 4: message to the man

So here we are.
Today’s Horribly Local Poor Poetry Month (HoLoPoPoMo) entry is written from a more rebellious point of view:

message to The Man

Your tie does not fool me
For I am not fooled
You can smile all you want
My emotions have cooled
The grey at your temples
Does not mean you’re wise
You’ve only grown older
And weakened your eyes
The clay you are made of’s
No different from mine
Despite your delusions
I don’t buy your line
And when you start falling
As everyone falls
You’ll look up at me
As I kick in your balls

The end.

Yes indeed. Welcome to me.

holopopono day 3: all the water

So here we are.

Today’s Horribly Local Poor Poetry Month (HoLoPoPoMo) entry muses on our recent horrible events in the Northeast, and the power that water has over us:

all the water

the water cleans
the water heals
the water sickens
the water reels

the water slaps
the water breaks
the water floods
the water aches

The end.

Tomorrow we will go back to lightness. (That sounds metaphoric now that I type it. I meant it literally... but I sure do hope I’m right on all counts.)

Yes indeed. Welcome to me.

holopopomo day 2: acquisition

So here we are.

Today’s Horribly Local Poor Poetry Month (HoLoPoPoMo) entry reflects on some recent news:

acquisition

Mickey and Donald and all of the gang
Went on a little spree
They bought some candy, they bought some pie
And cola, caffeine-free
But at the checkout line they saw
-- Twixt sour- and rubber balls --
An impulse buy, a tasty treat
And not marked down at all
“Oh, can we get it, please please please?”
Asked Pooh -- or was it Buzz --
“It’s cool and fun and popular
Like Unca Walter was”
Then Mickey nodded instantly
With no creative thought
The credit cards were verified
And Lucasfilm was bought

The end.

Yes indeed. Welcome to me.

hello holopopomo

So here we are.

Longtime readers may remember that last November, in my own response to not participating in National Novel Writers Month (NaNoWriMo), I created Horribly Local Blogging Month (HoLoBloMo), where I set out to write daily posts.

I’m not doing that this year. Instead, I am embarking on a new idea: Horribly Local Poor Poetry Month (HoLoPoPoMo). I call it Poor Poetry Month because low expectations are pretty much always a win-win.
